The Red-bellied Woodpecker and a Wolf Surprise - UPDATE January 18, 2023

Today, the red-bellied woodpecker landed with his eyes glued on the food below without a thought about how distinctive he looked with his beautiful red head and striking stripes. His looks are nothing to him. It’s how he’s looked most of his life. Nothing new. But he had no idea the excitement he adds to the daily wildlife shows out the window—remaining unconcerned when his short stint of acrobatics showed the bit of red on his belly that gives him his name. Each bird and animal makes its own contribution to the daily wildlife show out the window. But his opening act got topped today by a surprise encore—a wolf coming up the steps, seeing me in the window, and pausing with eyes wide open for a look to share. Never satisfied, I now want to see more of Bob Cat and the foxes to tide me over until bears come in spring.

Thank you for all you do,
