Ted by Sharon - UPDATE August 20, 2017

Sharon sent an update on Ted, and I happened to see a video of Sharon with Ted today at https://youtu.be/b1HkC3VLyaY.

Bear News August 20, 2017

Tomorrow, around 1:07-2:26 (cst) or so, we will witness a partial solar eclipse in the Ely area.  I know most of you will have the exact time and perhaps Dr. Rogers will include that in tonight's update. (edit: graphic below thanks to: https://interactives.courier-journal.com/projects/eclipse-2017. Another interesting eclipse simulation site is: http://time.com/4882923/total-solar-eclipse-map-places-view, click graphic and type in your zip code)

Eclipse Ely Peak timeAt the bear center we have prepared the bears by giving them all sunglasses.  I hope they will not look directly at the sun.  I did give them a few tutorials on the subject and I'm hoping they listened.   All kidding aside, we will be observing behaviors before, during and after the event.

I took the liberty to contact the Nashville Zoo; they will be observing animal behavior also.  I specifically ask them if they 1. Had bears and 2.  If they would share their observations, we'll see if they do.  It should be a very interesting day.

A note to brighten everyone's day, Ted bear is doing well.  Ted's mom (owner) Cindy was with us this weekend.  She served Ted some berries and icy treats to help him cool down.  Ted is a remarkable “people” bear.  He sometimes will bypass his treats to investigate the person feeding him.  He was more than happy to see Cindy.

Bears seem to have the ability to heal quickly from most injuries.  With the help of our excellent veterinarian staff and loving bear care staff, your ambassador bear Ted is in good firm hands.

Thank you all,
Sharon Herrell
Bear Curator

Thank you for all you do.
