A Hero, Good Group, Cubbies Win, Jewel’s Den - UPDATE July 25, 2017
I couldn’t write an update last night because my mind was too full. A long-time friend who I haven’t seen for years fell off a roof and became a paraplegic with vocal chords that don’t work.
He is a hero to me for the way he showed his care about bears during a bad time 25 years ago. I touched on that story in the July 14 update after a couple who had helped left a message for me at the Bear Center, but I didn’t tell how this man showed his heart. I had planned to get details from him when I start writing the book this fall.
On another note, I am touched by the efforts and enthusiasm to get out and learn by a couple people with physical difficulties in this Black Bear Field Course—also by the long-term dedication and knowledge of the group as a whole. Another great group all around.
Cubbies won hearts today. Cubbies were in the trees, on the ground, looking uncertain, and growing into their ears. These were the cubs of 12-year-old Shannon (daughter of Donna) and of 8-year-old Star (daughter of Shannon). We were mesmerized. No one wanted to leave, but we had yet to measure a den for a paper I’m writing. Everyone helped. The den was 111 inches long. The large cavity where Jewel, Fern, and Herbie snuggled, suckled, and slept as yearlings was 24 inches tall by 30 inches in diameter. The triangular entrance was 24 inches wide by 22 inches tall. Being in the den where we all watched so much happen in 2013 brought back memories.
