A Few Bears and Birds - UPDATE October 7, 2016
A dusting of snow this morning turned the ground whitish.
Two nights ago, Samantha and Kimani and their cubs were all here, and at another feeding station Jewel and Fern and there cubs were all there
Blue jay flying.
Last night, Samantha and Jewel and their cubs did not show, so we think they headed off to dens. We'll see if they show again this year.
Blue jay coming inLorie and her husband Tracy checked the deep rock den. No bear. They are checking the cards from the trail cams there, I believe.
At the Bear Center, Curator Sharon Herrell and Director of Education Judy Thon are off at a Bear Care conference, so I didn't hear about the ambassador bears today.
Out the window here at the WRI, I didn't see a bear all day until 6:30 PM--an adolescent male (now 7:25 PM and dark).
Blue jaysBlue jays came and went from a couple food piles while a sharp-shinned hawk swooped past the windows numerous times. A blue jay paused its activity once to hold perfectly still and watch overhead for nearly a minute. Another dove for the dense branches of the balsam fir tree just before a sharp-shin streaked past. Then it was back to feeding. Hungry for sunflower seeds and walnuts, a blue jay landed close to another, making it jump. The background is gold-colored red maple leaves that are starting to fall.
No pine marten or gray fox today.
Thank you for all you do.
