Bears Being Bears - UPDATE June 10, 2015
Holly coming down for breakfastGood pictures from the Bear Center folk today. The picture of Ted on the log is classic Ted. He still faces the woods on his log rather than the people as he did his early years. His direction changed when Lucky became a challenge. It seems black bears’ first rule is ‘Safety First.’ Ted was feeding like wild bears do this time of year, eating grass.
Ted at his logThe picture of Holly walking the log on her way to get food is great—good composition, lighting, and classic Holly.
At the WRI, little Mike’s (83 pounds) peace was suddenly interrupted when Jewel (186 pounds) came into view and immediately chased him up a tree. Otherwise, Jewel was calm and so much more mellow than our memories of her early nervous years. She is another bear we’d love to have a Den Cam.
Lynn and Donna on their anniversary 6-9-15Fern (158 pounds) went on alert when a gull swooped within 6 feet of her to land for spam. When the gull moved to another location and landed, she watched the gull for a couple minutes, moving for a better look. She must not have seen a lot of gulls, at least that close.
I’m wondering what ABC News said this evening about the bear attack in Great Smoky National Park. They called for information on the black bear population, attack statistics, advice, etc.
After mentioning the selfie we took of Donna and I eating anniversary cake last night, we forgot to put it in the update. We were asked about it so we will share it tonight.
