Holly, Lorie, Aspen? - UPDATE May 29, 2015

Sophie eating hazelnutsSophie eating hazelnutsAt the WRI, a male that came through on a mating mission was briefly distracted as it passed the scale with its food. He fed just long enough for us to get a weight (260.5 pounds) but not a picture. We think it is Aspen but are reserving final judgment. Aspen weighed 284 on May 20, which would mean he lost 23.5 pounds in the last 9 days, which is feasible for a male on the move. If this is true, no wonder he was distracted by the scale food. A couple minutes later, he looked like he was trying to make up lost time as he briskly followed the scent trail down the hill and across the beaver dam and out of sight.

Sophie came alone 2 ¼ hours later, so either the male didn’t catch up to her or was after another one, maybe Fern. Aspen was with Samantha back on May 17-20, so she has likely mated by now. We’ll be looking to see who pairs up with who as the mating season progresses. Sophie (182 pounds) ran at first but then settled down. We got her on the scale with hazelnuts, which she loves. With the soft look on her face, she might be saying thank you to Lily Fans for sending them.

Lorie has gained 4 pounds in the last 3 days, at least according to the scale. There can be several pounds inaccuracy due to stomach contents. Her weight today was 62. At least she isn’t losing weight.

We’re alert for more reports of Lily to track down. For that, we’re readying the video camera.

At the Bear Center, Holly and Lucky were a dynamic duo as Holly checked out chokecherry blossoms and other vegetation.

Thank you for all you do.
