More Den Checks, Lily, Aster, Ember - UPDATE November 4, 2014
Deer eating grass at WRIWhile Lynn sat in meetings all day, Mike and Lorie were out checking dens. They re-checked Lily’s deep rock den (empty) and brought the card back from the trail cam, putting a new card in it. A quick check of the card showed Aster cruising by it on August 11. She is easily identified in trail cam pictures because of her lack of eye shine in her bad right eye.
Then Mike and Lorie looked long and hard for June’s old deep rock den from 2008, which was used by Hazel five years earlier in 2003. Our coordinates for that den must be wrong, and Mike and Lorie haven’t been to this den before, so they couldn’t find it.
Deer selecting blades of grassThen they checked Juliet’s old culvert den and Curly’s old culvert den on Old Highway 169 but found that both were destroyed by road construction to widen the road as part of Vermilion State Park.
At WRI, white-tailed deer selected green blades of grass from the mixture of old and new grass out the window.
For volunteers, there is a new position, On-line Volunteer Recruiter, to help find volunteers for open volunteer positions. S/he will post position descriptions on pre-selected college and professional websites and conduct on-line searches for candidates. If you have a background in Human Resources or just enjoy computer research, please check out the full position description and submit a volunteer application at www.bear.org/website/volunteer.html. If you already have an application in our database, it is not necessary to resubmit one. Just notify us of your interest at

The best news of the day was seeing a picture of Lily (bottom) and Ember (on top of the feeding stand) on September 21. That’s 21 days into the hunting season when hunting pressure is way down. Lily and Ember likely made it through!
Thank you for all you do.
