Eyes Wide Open – UPDATE March 16, 2014
JulietThe den-watchers have been looking to complete the story on eye opening among Juliet’s cubs. One cub had its left eye still closed or only open a tiny slit at 2:27 PM on March 13. We scoured the archives and finally found footage from March 14 that confirmed all 3 cubs had both eyes open.
Juliet and 3 cubsJuliet’s den is not one we can go and look into and sit and watch until we have the answers. She is so far back under logs and brush that we have to rely on the Den Cam. Even at that, the Den Cam and Den-watchers have revealed a greater range in dates of eye opening than has previously been reported.
Juliet and cubOne of the cubs broke the old record for early opening by having its eyes open a slit at 30 days of age, 6 days earlier than has been reported before, and another cub broke the old record for late opening by having one eye only open a slit at best at 49 days of age, 2 days later than previous reports. Both in the same litter. We wish the Den Cam was available to the public.
