June’s Cubs and Aster – UPDATE October 5, 2013

June's cubs and AsterJune's cubs and Aster  Today we reviewed images from a resident’s trail camera and found pictures of Aster, Ember, and Cole…together!  It’s unlikely 2-year-old Aster is really hanging out with June’s orphaned cubs, but obviously the three are content to eat together at the same feeding station.  Nice to see.

UrsulaUrsulaJim and Bec braved the rain and wind today to locate a couple of bears and change their GPS batteries to get them ‘back on the map.’  It’s much easier to proactively change batteries, but that isn’t always possible.  They connected with Ursula in a swamp—which ensured they were wet from the bottom up as well as the top down.  Ursula came to them without cubs, but her motherly grunts indicated her cubs were nearby.

LilyLilyThey located Lily in an upland area and she led them to her cubs.  Ellie kindly produced a fresh scat, which obviously contained vegetation and was collected for analysis.  Lily had sent a GPS location at 11:02 PM last night from a known clover patch, and the examination of Ellie’s scat showed it was entirely clover.

We did not make it to Faith today.  We remain hopeful she will move to a more accessible location, but we will continue to track her remotely via telemetry as needed.

Thank you for all you do.
