Slowing Down – UPDATE October 4, 2013
Ruffed Grouse Jewel moved again overnight before settling at the edge of a swamp where she spent the day. Lily and her cubs remained in the same low, damp area where Sue found them yesterday. We wonder if either is feeding on speckled alder (Alnus incana) leaves like we’ve seen other bears do in the weeks before denning.
TedUrsula and Faith both have GPS units that need new batteries. Ursula is fairly accessible and shouldn’t be a problem. Faith, on the other hand, is about as inaccessible as she could be. We’ve been watching her GPS readings closely—hoping she would move closer to a logging road. She’s showed no inclination of moving away from the swampy area she’s currently foraging in. Tomorrow’s weather does not look promising for fieldwork. We’ll see how much we can get done.
Ted checks rock denAt the Bear Center today, Ted checked out the rock den. Honey and Lucky shared the rock den during the winter of 2008-2009, but it has not been used as a den since. Perhaps this will be the year.
Work continues on preparing presentations for the upcoming International Wolf Center Symposium (Oct 10-13).
Thank you for all you do.
