Hunting Begins – UPDATE September 1, 2013

Bear bait signWe appreciate signs like this that let us know there are bear baits in the areaThe first day of the bear hunt has come to a close.  It’s been a long day after a short night.  All 8 of our radio-collared bears that carry GPS units are still transmitting their locations to our computers.  We’re monitoring their movements closely.  Two bears need battery changes soon.  We’ll schedule that work for midday to minimize disturbance to any hunters in the area.

We remain concerned for June.  She continues to flirt with a bait site on private property that’s bordered on two sides by the State Park.  We’ll be watching her movements remotely and checking on her when we can.

Bear season ends October 13, but most bears are taken in this area in the first 3 weekends.  We’ll be on edge until September 16 this year.

Thank you for all you do.
