Bears Emerging - UPDATE April 10, 2023

Carolyn, Clay and Carl - C. Quick

Last evening, I got a call. It was the first sighting of a bear in this area this year. It was 6-year-old Carolyn and her two male yearlings Clay and Carl looking good against the white snow. Carolyn is Shadow’s great-granddaughter, and daughter of Donna.

Not to be left too far behind, Holly showed her Minnesota genes by coming out, too. The picture by Liz Schaeffer shows Holly looking as beautiful as I’ve ever seen with her richly colored muzzle and smooth black fur, again looking dazzling against the snow as she pushed her way out from her rock den and climbed on top of it.TashaTasha

Tasha with her Kentucky genes has been out awhile and on this 61°F day was not averse to lying in the snow showing her belly. From this angle, her white skin is visible through the sparse fur of her belly. The sparse fur lets cubs snuggle close to mom’s warm skin.

"Taught" caught Holly’s action at the den and at the creek where she was using her paw and teeth to move the green vegetation out of her way for a drink.
