Pixie, Cubs, a Break-up, and the Bird of the Day - UPDATE June 2, 2022
Pixie with cubsTwo days ago, I got an urgent call to drive fast to identify a mother with two cubs. The resident had already captured proof of the situation—the picture of the mom at the base of a tree with the two cubs peering around. It was Pixie—the bear who wears her heart on her chest. The mother of Dexter and Dustin we all got to know in 2020 and 2021. I was very glad to see her (the first time this year), and I hope to learn the sexes of her cubs one of these days.
PixieThe bird of the day was a mature bald eagle that landed in a tree across the yard at the WRI. The light was good. I grabbed the camera, focused, and waited a minute or two for action. The eagle flew, saying goodbye with a flap of the wings such that I could see its head and the details of its feathers. Thank you, eagle.
Lucy and her yearlings are still together. Sallyann split from Katie and Kenny on Saturday evening, the 28th some 4 miles away. Each break-up is a little different. Sallyann was playing with her yearlings when a good-sized male appeared. She led her yearlings into the woods, left them there, and went off with the male. She has been with him ever since and has not crossed paths with her yearlings that anyone has seen.
Thank you for all you do,
