Oliana and 4 male cubsOliana peacefully chewing. Even though she has been absent so many of her 8 years, when she shows up, she is the same calm, sweet bear as ever.
Today, Ursula was resting in a big white pine, nursing a cub on a big branch near the top of the tree. At the same time Wild Mom, now named Emelia (not a member of Shadow’s clan), and her 3 cubs were up a red pine.
The pictures show the big difference between white pines and red pines as refuge trees. White pines provides much more shade and have big branches for resting, playing, and nursing. Red pines have slender branches that have to be less comfortable, and they have much more open canopies that can subject bears to possible heat stress. No wonder the bears favor white pines as refuge trees.
