With the temperature 6°F all day and now below zero, I wasn’t surprised to see the birds puffed up for warmth, although much colder temperatures will be here soon.

Blue jays, red-breasted nuthatches, and black-capped chickadees had their feathers out and their legs in so only their feet were showing. A female mink made trips for bologna faster than she could eat them. Each time, she disappeared under the front deck where I believe she is stashing them or eating them at her leisure through the day.

The gray foxes are too handsome to not click. This one is the tamest, and my shishing noise through the window couldn’t make him look at me when he was intrigued with another fox.
At the NABCAt the Bear Center, it looks like Spencer Peter was helping the birds stay warm by giving them high fat foods to burn—like this red-breasted nuthatch. Peanuts are high in unsaturated fats.
