Date Night, Deer, and Stars - UPDATE February 3, 2018

Date night was fun a couple days ago. Donna and I drove to Duluth, eating along the way, and went to a lecture by the 32-year-old daughter of Ely’s Polar Explorer Paul Schurke and his wife Sue. Broken Antler 01/26/18Broken Antler 01/26/18Paul and Sue took their baby daughter on trips around the world, including to a bear den. Now Bria is taking trips on her own with groups. Paul is one of the founders of Wilderness Inquiry which offers trips around the world. It was nice to talk to them. One of the topics is a trip to be near polar bears in the fall of 2019 when I’m 80 and Jane Goodall is 85. I haven’t contacted Jane yet, so I don’t know if this will all come together, but people are already saying “Count me in” to join us at $10,000 each (6 days) if it does come together. Their telling me that any profits will be split between the Bear Center and some other cause that I’ll learn more about on March 24 when we see Jane. I have to get off dead center and put some things together on this soon.

Yesterday, I said hi to Ted from outside his pen. He said hi back but was pretty lethargic, so that was it.

Today, I missed a picture of a deer I think is Broken Antler without any antlers. We’ll see if we see Broken Antler with antlers again, but this deer acted like him and looked like him. I was hoping to get a picture so readers could tell me for sure if it was him or not. Maybe tomorrow. The picture of him is from a week or so ago.

This evening from 7 to 9 PM at the Bear Center, Meteorologist Mike Lynch will have his big telescopes for people to look through at the stars and planets. However, it is cloudy, so I suspect he will just be speaking and maybe showing pictures in the Hope Learning Center Classroom.

Thank you for all you do.

Lynn Rogers, Biologist, Wildlife Research Institute and North American Bear Center
