Wolf - UPDATE June 29, 2017

In this nature-loving neighborhood that I am fortunate to a part of, an injured animal starts phones ringing. A neighbor called and said a wolf that couldn’t use its right hind leg was there. Injured wolfInjured wolfUnable to hunt, the wolf had somehow detected the fish remains that Charlie put out for the bald eagles. By the time I got there, the wolf had made 4 visits, taking a bit of fish back in the woods each time. Charlie chided me for being so slow. My timing turned out to be almost perfect. A couple minutes after I got there, one of Charlie’s guests, a Lily Fan, spotted the wolf returning. Everyone was quiet as I slipped out the door and aimed the camera. The wolf saw me and hobbled back to the woods.

It was not the wolf I anticipated. I thought it would be the white wolf that people have been seeing for months. It walks down the shoulder of the road with hardly a glance at vehicles that go by or stop for pictures. I saw it coming toward me on a dirt road a couple months back and snapped some pictures I’d like to find. It was a lactating female, which put the neighborhood on alert for pups.

Thank you for all you do.
