Birds, Fox, the Past, and Merchandise - UPDATE March 3, 2017

On this below zero morning, birds were anxious for sunflower seeds to fuel their bodies. Chickadees tried to land, and pine siskins tried to prevent that, Chickadee landingChickadee landingbut there were enough seed piles for all. In one picture, it looks like a chickadee is trying to catch a chickadee, but it is just looking for a place to land.

A Lily Fan commented “I think the grey fox is one of the most beautiful creatures on this earth!” Another said, “ I'm struck by the how the fox seems more cat-like than dog-like.” I think so, too. Unlike other members of the dog family, the gray fox can climb trees. Along that line, we’ve never had a red fox on the second floor deck. I suspect that the gray fox’s comfort in climbing might be a reason our new second-floor visitor does that.

Pine siskinPine siskinA Lily Fan sent me this link to an old Wild Kingdom show from the old days when I tranquilized and ear-tagged. We learned so much more after we graduated to kinder and gentler methods. In the opening scene, I talked faster than I’ve been able to talk before or since. Reading a script, I had a chance to talk without sounding hesitant. Donna held the cue cards for that scene, and I talked way too fast. The rest of the narration for the program I did in a studio in Chicago where they made me read it over again slower, and maybe a third time even slower. Marlin was a great guy. This was back in 1981. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHK51fCX2kk

Ideas for merchandise are coming in. Many thanks. They include Ted posters; a cast bear footprint, books for adults and kids, keepsake box, votive candle holder and a small, unique silver bear pendant.

ChickadeeChickadeeA Lily Fan couple said they had trouble registering for a Black Bear Field Course on the website (bearstudy.org). I think someone will fix that problem, but don’t be afraid to call me at 218-365-4480 if you have any problem. We’ll figure everything out.

An idea, if you’re looking for a special gift for someone, a Black Bear Field Course would be the most memorable gift you could give anyone.

Thank you for all you do.
