Bears and Eggs - UPDATE September 26, 2015

Braveheart and cubsBraveheart and cubsWe can add Braveheart and her cubs to last night’s list of mothers with cubs seen lately. One of the community bear feeders got this picture late this afternoon.

Snapping turtle eggsSnapping turtle eggsAccording to the best information we could find, the snapping turtle eggs we took from a road-killed turtle and tried to incubate should have hatched in late August or early September. We wondered why they didn’t. We unearthed them and opened a couple—just yolk, no developing turtle. We candled the one pictured and saw no form in it—apparently just yolk again. We thought we made a good try but have to report a failure.

New England LuncheonNew England LuncheonOn a brighter note, the annual luncheon gathering of Lily Fans at Sturbridge is scheduled for October 24 at 11:30 AM at the location shown in the invitation. All proceeds will go to the intern program that was so successful this year. Now, with the Ecology Hall, we want to expand the number of interns to 6 to have full coverage all week long. Judy Thon, Director of Education, is spearheading the intern program and will be interviewed there by Skype.

Thank you for your continued contributions for bear food.

Thank you for all you do.

Lynn Rogers, Biologist, Wildlife Research Institute and North American Bear Center
