It’s a Wrap - UPDATE August 8, 2015

Nashville warblerNashville warblerAfter intense filming since Wednesday afternoon, it’s a wrap, as they said. They filmed in the wild and at the Bear Center. The producers believe the 1-hour documentary will air in England in late fall and in the US next year. The bears are part of an examination of chimp, elephant, lion, and bear behavior. The documentary will show the softer side of these animals. We are very glad to a part of what could be part of a new genre of animal documentaries. The film team was excited about the footage they got.

At the Bear Center, visitors have been voicing high appreciation for the information we present. Every hour of the day has a behind-the-scenes tour that includes all four bears or a world-wide podcast as part of an enrichment session. I’m grateful to the interns, to Lily Fans who are Bear Educators, and to the staff who put all this together. Participants seem excited about the information they are getting from the programs and the exhibits. What the staff has come up with is working.

At the WRI, warblers are gathering insects (eggs, caterpillars, and adult insects). This Nashville Warbler (Oreothlypis ruficapilla) is gleaning something from the bottom of a leaf that also has eggs on top of it.

I’m no longer afraid of the Herring Gull hurting me if it accidentally gets my fingers when taking spam. It did get my fingers but didn’t break the skin and didn’t hurt that bad. The gull recoiled with a squawk like I’d never heard before. It’s usual routine is to come to the window, look at me from 4 feet away, and periodically peck on the window. When I get up, it walks to the place where it can easily fly to the spot where I usually hand-feed it. The gull makes me get up and take periodic breaks like they say you should do.

Thank you for all you do.
