Things are happening.

Herring gull flyingHerring gull flyingAt the WRI, when I stepped outside in the sunshine, two things looked unusually nice or interesting—a gull with sun shining through its feathers and a dragonfly sitting still and approachable as it warmed up. Thinking the dragonfly was an unusual opportunity that might be of interest in the Ecology Hall, I snapped its picture. Dragonflies are famous for their vision, so I tried to catch the pattern of facets in its compound eyes. Day-flying dragonflies have as many as 30,000 facets that can see the colors we do plus colors in the ultraviolet spectrum. One study claimed that dragonflies have the best vision in the animal kingdom. Eagles might dispute that, but dragonflies might have the best vision in some ways. A study also claimed they are the masters of the airways, which might be disputed by the graceful gulls that effortlessly show us awesome flight. But this being the land of lakes, we have a lot of dragonflies, so a poster on them might be of interest. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2966970/Dragonflies-Ultra-HD-Winged-insects-best-vision-animal-kingdom.html#ixzz3cQRmwvFa

Looking forward to seeing you at the LilyPad Picnic and Grand Opening of the Northwoods Ecology Hall in 6 weeks (July 17-19). Scott and the staff are planning food and special events as part of that.

Thank you for all you do.
