A Mystery and a Beginning - UPDATE February 22, 2015

Scott Edgett at the finish lineScott Edgett at the finish lineLast year, we believed all 3 of Juliet’s cubs were males. How could we have missed that one was a female? Now, going through the archives a year later, we are doubly vigilant for what we missed. At 06:40:34, a cub popped it’s rear end up. Examining the video frame by frame, the white line between the base of the cub’s legs, said “girl.” We admit, it’s easier to reach that conclusion knowing that one did turn out to be a girl, but we do think it is a view we missed.

Female cub - February 22, 2014Female cub - February 22, 2014As the eyes open, action steps up. Today was the beginning. At 10:05:48, a cub faced the camera, and the eyes are definitely open a crack at the age of 30 days and a few minutes. We remember last year when a Den-Watcher called to say she had spotted this dark glint of an eyeball.

Frozen ScottFrozen ScottUnblemished snow is piled up in the foreground and on the left log wall of the den—no telltale pits in it from licking. Then, at 22:10:43, Juliet licked in snow for 84 seconds at a rate of about 2 licks per second.

Today was Scott’s big race in the Wolftrack Classic Sled Dog Race. It began at about 20 below zero and ended 3 hours later at about 6 below zero. Scott’s face showed the cold as he crossed the finish line proudly wearing his North American Bear Center shoulder patch. Some of the staff, his extended family, and 4 Lily Fans were there.
