Slowing Down, Live from the NABC, Painting Murals - UPDATE October 21, 2014

Ted trying to stay awakeTed trying to stay awakeBreakfast is getting to be more of a non event for some of our bears. Lucky has become a no show for breakfast, but we all know that he is a late sleeper. He did make a brief appearance yesterday afternoon, though food is no longer a motivator for him. Holly on the other hand runs toward us when we come out for feedings, she still has a lot of energy. The last few days, Holly has been picking the dried cranberries out of her trail mix and eating only them. Honey is taking daily walks, especially when a staff member walks out the back door. The staff prepared dinner but Lucky was a no show. Could this be day one of hibernation for Lucky? Last year Lucky's first day of hibernation was Oct. 24. We will just have to wait and see.

The staff have blocked the "windows" of the haven and cabin dens in preparation for winter. We know from past years that Ted does not like his "window" closed until very late. Here is a picture of Ted looking out the window. Trying to get a picture of Ted's eyes open... well it didn't happen.

In the next week or two, more straw will be placed near the dens so the bears can move it as they wish.

The question of winter den cams at the NABC has been asked by cam watchers. The answer is yes, we will have them, but we will first have to wait and see where the bears choose to den.

Ready for the mural!Back wall is ready for the muralOn another topic Scott Edgett will host "Live from the NABC" tomorrow Oct 22 at 1:00 PM. His guest will be Lora, a long time employee of the NABC who will be retiring this fall. I'm sure Lora will have a few stories to tell of her early years working for the NABC. You can tune in at www.bear.org go to live cameras, select PTZ camera, turn on your volume and if you choose, log into our chat room. The entire NABC staff thanks Lora for all the years she has worked to further the mission of the NABC.

The Northwoods Ecology Exhibit Hall habitat and landscape will now move into the next phase, painting the back wall. We are working with folks to get just the right scene that will show the beauty of the Ely area. Painting that large wall (apx 40' x 10') will take some time but it will be a great addition to the exhibit hall.

Thank you for all your support.

Judy Thon, Director of Education, North American Bear Center
