Maples in Color - UPDATE September 21, 2014

Red and Yellow MapleRed and Yellow MapleNow that the computer is working and we have a dial tone and internet, we can say that maples, especially red maples (Acer rubrum), are giving the northwoods color. Colors reflectedColors reflectedSome red maples turn red, others turn yellow, as can be seen in pictures of the two red maples side by side, one yellow, one red.

Palm warblers and ruby-crowned kinglets are coming through in number. Both have the habit of hovering by small branches to pick off insects.

At the Bear Center, 17-year-old Ted’s coat is looking great, but 18-year-old Honey has a couple weeks to go before she looks neat and tidy. Palm warbler hoveringPalm warbler hovering7-year-old Lucky looks great and is as agile as ever, crossing a log.

Another mammal we see more of this time of year is the Woodland Deer MouseWoodland Deer MouseWoodland Deer Mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus gracilis), identified by big ears and a long, bi-colored tail.

This is a juvenile still in gray fur. He or she paused to look at the camera before making good its escape from a bucket of wildlife food.
