Ted, Walking Trails, etc. - UPDATE August 20, 2014
North American Bear CenterThe Bear Center is just a nice place to be. It was great to hear the enthusiasm of people who are happy to be learning about bears.
We’re waiting for the results of Ted’s tests, especially on his hair loss in spots.
Common Loons - 8-19-14Yesterday’s walks and pontoon ride were a joy. Always something new. A commotion in the water drew us closer. It was a family of loons, two adults and a large chick, staying low in the water and making shallow dives, skimming just under the surface apparently in pursuit of minnows. They seldom fully surfaced. Course participants exclaimed how they had never been so close to loons before.
Loon Chick - 8-19-14For Lynn, it was the first time he had ever seen such behavior—and right next to the boat. People snapped away. Great show.
Gulls flew by but didn’t compete with the loons. Then the loons were calm, swimming and preening like we usually see them.
Loon low in the water - 8-19-14Thank you for your great response to our plea for help mapping bear trails and recording reactions of bears seen along the way. We are going through the emails first to see who is willing to commit to the whole study from August 28 through September 14. Anticipating having about a dozen volunteers.
Ring-billed Gull 8-19-14We let the Conservation Officers and local bear hunting guide know we will be working in the woods close in around the community. Thank you also to those who can’t help in the field but are helping with food money. Very much appreciated.
Thank you for all you do.
