Writing and Looking Forward – UPDATE November 1, 2013

Ember - Oct 26, 2013Ember peeks out - Oct 26, 2013On this rainy, cloudy day a person doesn’t feel bad staying in and writing all day.  This time the writing was a paper for submission to a peer-reviewed journal.

We're looking forward to the Hinckley gathering of Lily Fans (November 9th).  Organizer Sarah Zirbes says it’s shaping up to be the biggest yet.

Lily - Oct 26, 2013Lily blusters - Oct 26, 2013We finally reviewed all the trail cam images and video we retrieved when we visited Lily’s den earlier this week.  The pictures show Ember peeking out of the rock den at 8:21 PM on Oct 26 and Lily at the den just a minute later with her mouth open and one front paw just a blur—likely blowing and swatting.  Look closely and you’ll see a cub’s ear in the den.  The next image is of Lily standing outside the den the next morning.  All subsequent images and video captured at the den are of Lily and her cubs.

Lily - Oct 27, 2013Lily - Oct 27, 2013The report from the Speakers Bureau for this past month showed speakers reaching 488 adults and 431 children.  That’s 919 people who learned the truth about black bears in 5 states plus England.  Good going!  A teacher commented to one of the speakers that she was amazed how focused the children were who had A.D.D.   Bears have that effect.  We’ve noticed that people with A.D.D. come into their own in the woods—taking in an amazing amount.  In Black Bear Field Courses, they are often the first to spot bears.  We suspect A.D.D. was a special blessing when people had to gather food and watch for predators in millennia past.
