New Arrival – UPDATE October 9, 2013
Woodland caribou and mooseToday, a Woodland Caribou mount joined the moose at the Bear Center. The Woodland Caribou (now extirpated from the area) will introduce the Ecological History Exhibit when the Northwoods Ecology Hall opens in the new addition.
We were delighted that Gay Bradshaw picked up on the news of June’s death and wrote a great piece for Psychology Today. She kindly sent us a link at http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/bear-in-mind/201310/the-fall-june.
We were also delighted that Charlie Russell ended his enlightened talk at the Bear Care Conference in Washington, D.C. with a picture of us with June and a strong tribute to our research and the way we gain the trust of bears to obtain data.
Tomorrow, 4 busloads of International Wolf Center Symposium participants (about 150 people) will be coming to the Bear Center from Duluth. We look forward to meeting them from 9 to 11 AM tomorrow. Bear action in front of the windows should start shortly after 9.
We’re also looking forward to giving presentations at the International Wolf Center Symposium on (1) wolf-bear interactions and (2) differences in wolf and bear facial expressions, vocalizations, and body language. These presentations will be between 8:30 AM and 9:20 AM at the Wolf Conference on Sunday, October 13th at the DECC in Duluth. To encourage Lily Fans to attend the conference that day, the conference organizers reduced the usual 1-day price of $159 to $50 and will give 20% of that to the Bear Center. Fans can pay at the door. The Wolf Center is grateful that Lily Fans worked so hard in voting to secure $65,000 for the Wolf Center at a time when they especially needed it. We look forward to meeting any folks who can make it. For more information about the conference see http://www.wolf.org/wolves/news/events_2013conference.asp.
We also look forward to meeting Lily Fans at the annual Hinckley Gathering held on November 9 this year—always fun and good food, and it will include a dynamite silent auction. More on this coming up.
Thank you for all you do.
