Cold and Bears – UPDATE February 2, 2013

Chickadee - Feb 2, 2013Black-capped Chickadee - Feb 2, 2013The temperature rose 39F today—from minus 33 to plus 6 on this otherwise beautiful, sunny day that made the chickadees’ eyes sparkle.    We might be exaggerating to say minus 33F because air pockets on the drive to work at 5:45 AM varied from minus 24 to minus 33F without enough wind to mix the pockets.

At the Bear Center, the bears were quietly resting away the winter.  None of the three (Ted, Lucky, and Honey) have set foot outside their dens for weeks.  Sleeping alone, they aren’t stirred up by each other and have little incentive to get out and take a break from any flare-ups of tension.  In the wild, we’ve never seen bears hibernate together other than mothers and cubs.

The Bear Facts and Fun Team has come up with another great piece—this time about Lily from Cubhood to Motherhood.  The amount of work this group puts into pulling together these archival pictures and facts is amazing.  They pay attention to detail and write them cleverly.  They do their homework, and it shows once again at http://www.facebook.com/notes/bffbetty/lily-then-and-now-in-pictures-and-words/254866444644182.  It’s another case of Lily Fans in action.

Thank you for all you do.
