Cub Sighting! – UPDATE January 26, 2013
Lily's foot visible as she stretches - Jan 26, 2013 We got our first good look at one of Lily’s cubs when a nose poked out of her fur at 5:40 AM CT—followed 2 minutes later by a cub face! Now 2 weeks old, the cubs are stronger and crawling around.
A cub sighting in Lily's den! - Jan 26, 2013It only gets better from here as the days grow longer, the sun climbs higher, and the cubs grow stronger still.
A video of the cub sighting is posted at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYYWyhGFujM. It is easier to see the cub in the video than in the still image.
Spider eyeshine? - Jan 26, 2013Today, we noticed a tiny bright light coming from a spot on Lily’s back. At first we thought it was a drop of water reflecting the light—but it’s too cold for water. The more we watched the light flicker, the more we were convinced it was eyeshine. But it had to be a creature so small it wasn’t disturbing Lily. A spider? Spiders have eyeshine, and you can actually locate spiders at night with a flashlight. Try it!
Jewel rests her head on a yearling - Jan 26, 2013The eyeshine reflects straight back toward the light so remember to hold the flashlight close to your eye—tight to your temple works well.
We switched Jewel’s den cam to fulltime infrared. The IR grayscale image is far superior to what we were getting when it switched to color. There just isn’t enough light in the den to produce a good color image. The infrared image will provide a clearer image and consistent quality. The more we can see the more we can learn.
Thank you for all you do.
