Hunkered Down – UPDATE January 22, 2013
Frost on Lily's back - Jan 22, 2013 On this coldest (hopefully) day of the year, the bears remained hunkered down and so did we. It stayed well below zero all day and is minus 17F at the moment.
Ted's den - Jan 22, 2013This morning we noticed that Jewel and her yearlings had barely moved overnight. We see that they have shifted a bit now, but still only slightly. They are curled up keeping their noses warm, no doubt. Our old infrared heat loss videos showed the most heat being lost from the muzzle.
Honey's den - Jan 22, 2013The light in Lily’s den was just right so we could see the frost on her back. Moisture from her breath has frozen to the very tips of her guard hairs.
Lucky's den - Jan 22, 2013At the Bear Center, all is quiet. The pictures show Ted, Honey, and Lucky’s dens surrounded by soft, fresh snow. Where are the bears? Just like the wild bears, Ted, Honey, and Lucky are hunkered down in their dens. No fresh tracks—and even the old snowed-in tracks are from staff going to check on the bears.
Our thoughtful day ended with a burst of touching memories. A 10-minute video created by Olatz Azcona Munarriz chronicling the ups, downs, and emotional moments Hope’s life ended our day. Today would have been Hope’s 3rd birthday. We had to share. It’s at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8GIl_XcvDso&feature=youtu.be
Thank you for all you do.
