Lily contemplating the universe - July 16, 2012Lily contemplating the universe - July 16, 2012Lily - July 16, 2012Lily - July 16, 2012While Sue spent the day transmitting many gigabytes of video footage to the BBC for use in the “Evergreen” version of Planet Earth Live to be broadcast shortly—a whole hour exclusively about the bears, Lynn and the Bear Course group floundered through dense brush to catch up to Lily to change her GPS batteries.

They found Lily resting in the shade and not interested in participating on this hot day. Eventually she acquiesced as long as she could stay in the shade and try to deal with the deer flies and horse flies that were pestering her. The group watched from a distance, some in tears, as Lily lounged back and relaxed in vulnerable poses, showing her trust and disinterest in the observers. Her heart rate was 82 per minute.

The day was memorable for all.
