Valentine’s Day Play - UPDATE February 14, 2017

Holly and Lucky celebrated Valentine’s Day by beginning to play. It’s the first such interaction between them that I know of this winter. It’s too much of a coincidence that it would occur on Valentine’s Day,Lucky and Holly on Valentine's DayLucky and Holly form a heart on Valentine's Day so either it means they know more than we think about special dates, or it just shows how great some coincidences can be. A Lily Fan captured this 7-minute video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vAtfM5fFhRI of how it happened. Holly’s activity woke Lucky who shortly came over to Holly’s bed and engaged in some gentle play like we used to see. At the 4:08 mark, though, Holly became defensive and the play ended. Lucky retreated to his bed and didn’t try to play anymore.

Pine siskinPine siskinWe’re proud of our Intern Andie today. At this very moment (5:15 PM), she is giving a presentation on hibernation at University of Minnesota, Morris. Director of Education Judy Thon is there to hear it and take pictures for tomorrow’s update. Andie is coming back for her third summer this year. Being an Intern or a volunteer Bear Educator is fulfilling. And now that we are the number one destination in Ely on Trip Advisor with the word spreading about what we have to offer, the Bear Center is looking for more Bear Educator Volunteers who want to help educate visitors during the busy summer season. Bear Ed. Volunteers come from many walks of life. Many have taken Black Bear Field Courses. They also learn from Ted, Lucky, Holly, and Tasha. Volunteering at the NABC is not only fun but rewarding. You work with a small but passionate staff and with summer interns who are also learning about bears. We want to get them all out to the Wildlife Research Institute a couple times to meet the wild bears.
