Clean-up Crew, Yellowstone, Contest - UPDATE May 11, 2015

MallardDonald the Mallard DuckAt dawn at WRI, a clean-up crew consisting of Donald and Daisy were in the yard taking care of leftovers. Donald is pictured.

It was raining today, but the picture from last evening with Woods Lake in the background shows how spring is coming.

Martyn and crew left mid-morning after taking on more work for the Ecology Hall. Martyn’s skill, technical abilities, and desire to do good for the earth and Bear Center made me thankful I know him, his wife, and assistant—all with the same attitude.

Woods Lake - May 10, 2015Woods Lake - May 10, 2015At the Bear Center, there was more to be thankful for as the staff and new intern planted 25 white pines in the enclosure.

A reporter called for a comment on the ABC video circulating worldwide about the black bear in Yellowstone that supposedly was chasing people. Totally untrue.  Here is the video on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/abcnews /videos/10153394621473812 and the story on ABC's website: http://abcnews.go.com/US/black-bears- chase-tourists-yellowstone-national-park/story ?id=30922137&cid=fb_abcn_sf Brandon and Andie plant white pinesBrandon & Andie plant white pines   The video shows a mother bear simply crossing a big bridge with people, wanting only to get across with scared cubs that were unable to ignore the people like the mother did. The bear chased no one and showed no aggression.

Then a Lily Fan sent a news piece about a study that backs up what we’ve found—that most bears won’t rely on human food. The newscast was refreshing http://denver.cbslocal.com/2015/04/13/lengthy-study-finds-most-black-bears-wont-rely-on-human-food I’m looking forward to writing a book of our findings as soon as the Ecology Hall is open and on track.

In the contest for Best Town, Lily Fans are working hard! We lead Spearfish, SD 4,255 to 3,576 and are only a couple hundred votes behind Chatanooga, TN, which has over a half million residents. Anyone in the world can vote for Ely at http://www.outsideonline.com/1972941/best-towns-2015.

Thank you for all you do.
