Holly's visitor investigates - UPDATE February 11, 2015

Pine GrosbeakThis 3½-minute highlight video starts with cute, noisy cubs protesting the cold and separation as Juliet rises for a stretch at 3:27 PM. Temperatures were approaching the high for the day around 3 degrees F below zero. It ends with Juliet and the cubs settled and nursing at 6:14 PM as darkness falls and temperatures are plummeting toward a low of 32° below zero in this unusually cold winter.

At Holly’s den today, the vole took its turn at investigating the lens. Somehow, Holly detected the active little visitor and lifted her head. She looked closer and closer until the vole left. Holly never looked alarmed. As soon as the vole left, she tucked her head under and went back to quietly spending the winter. Temperature 7° above F. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8QarQPXo7c&feature=youtu.be

A new bird visited the feeder today—a Pine Grosbeak (Pinicola enucleator), about the size of a robin. We’re near the southern edge of its usual winter range, so we see this beautiful bird most winters.

A Lily Fan who uses the Amazon Smile program we mentioned last night sent another tip on how to help the North American Bear Center when you purchase online without spending a single extra penny. She said, “If you install IGIVE, your purchases will generate an even bigger percentage for the NABC. She said she and her friends use IGIVE for nearly everything they buy online. Thousands of retailers participate. http://www.bear.org/website/how-to-help/igive.html

Thank you for all you do.
