Juliet, Aster – UPDATE April 15, 2014

Juliet's cubJuliet's cubJuliet and cubs are still in the den.  They could leave anytime.  The cold snap has created a crust that would support the cubs and, in most places, Juliet as well.  She and the cubs have been venturing out like Lily did last year and this year.

Juliet's cubJuliet's cubAre Juliet and her cubs still in because it’s been below freezing recently?  The forecast for Thursday is above freezing (37F) with a warming trend to follow.  No big white pines are nearby to use for refuge trees, but the cubs look well-developed and able to travel.

JulietJulietWe’ll see when Juliet decides to lead them away.  To avoid influencing her decision, we’ve not been out to the den to realign the camera or install a trail cam.  Maybe we’ll regret that.  Sometimes it’s hard to know which way to go.

Juliet's cubJuliet's cubAster's GPS unit is providing insight into her behavior.  She is still in the vicinity of her den and appears to be using it from time to time.  There are hours-long gaps in her GPS readings, which may indicate time spent in the den.  She wandered some in the vicinity of her den this afternoon but her signal disappeared again at 5:25 PM.  She may be spending the night in her den.

Thank you for all you do.
