Juliet, Holly, and Jane – UPDATE April 3, 2014

Juliet pulls on her foodpadJuliet pulls on her foodpadJuliet and her 3 cubs were very active the last couple days with temperatures in the mid-30’s F.  The camera is in a perfect position to give us the best views ever of footpad removal.  Yesterday, Juliet repeatedly bit and pulled at her left front footpad—leaving it hanging in shreds.

Juliet's Cub #3Juliet's Cub #3My sixth graders have been asking me all year about the bears.  Last year, as fifth graders they watched some live cam, some archives and learned a lot about bear behavior during hibernation.  These are students who live in a rural community, who come from a hunting culture.  Many are hunters or children of hunters, but they do not understand why the live stream was denied to schools.  When they asked about the live cam, I explained the permit issues and that Dr. Rogers had been denied being able to stream live video.  Juliet's Cub #1Juliet's Cub #1They were very surprised that it seemed that the DNR was against sharing the natural behaviors of bears.  "How can they be against education?"  When I told them that Doc had been cleared to allow archived footage for teachers, they were so excited!  We watched several minutes yesterday and a few today.  I will need to set a schedule again because they cannot get enough of watching the cubs!  Thanks for letting me share this archived video with my students! — Holly Hill, SC

Juliet and 2 cubsJuliet and 2 cubsThank you so much for providing this opportunity!!!  It was perfect timing.  I am getting ready to start my unit on Organisms and in the past we have always watched den footage and videos of the families after they have left the dens to learn about the needs of the bears and their woodland ecosystems.  Then we compare their needs and their ecosystems with that of the animals living in our school garden and to eagles which we also watch online.  Thanks again!!! I can't wait!!! — Willow Spring, NC

Chomp!Chomp!Thank you !    Thank you !    Thank you !  Everything worked great !!!!    I appreciate your help. My 2nd graders are already excited that they know they can soon see Juliet and her cubs.  Just can't wait until tomorrow morning when I can show them !!!!! — St Cloud, MN

Cub licks Juliet's muzzleCub licks Juliet's muzzleThank you!  I have used the bear cam in my classroom since the birth of Hope.  What a priceless addition to the study of bears!  I was heartbroken last summer to find out that my students would not have this to look forward to. I am so appreciative to you, Lynn and Sue for the opportunity to show the video footage to my class and know that we will continue to hope that someday, soon, we will be able to see it live again!  Thank you! — Coon Rapids, MN

Nose to noseNose to noseMy class will be so excited to be able to view the den-cam again. It is a Special Education class of 3rd, 4th & 5th grade.  Thank you for all that the Bear Center does to put this marvelous learning tool in the classroom. The kids love it! — Houston, TX

Feet, feet, and more feet!Feet, feet, and more feet!I can't wait to show my students the videos from the den cam.  We have been intently watching cams of a couple bald eagle nests and even some nesting great horned owls.  The kiddos will love seeing these bear cubs! — Redwood Falls, MN

TCub bites Juliet's pawCub bites Juliet's pawhank you so much!  I used it today and the kids were fascinated!  I have a lot of background to give them, but the video I showed really perked their interest. — New Milford, CT

At the Bear Center, Holly ventured more than 10 feet out of her den last night—beating out Ted and Lucky to become the second bear (after Honey) to leave their den.

Jane Goodall turned 80 today and is still going strong.  She is on the Bear Center’s International Volunteer Advisory Board and recently sent a strong letter to Governor Mark Cub bites his own legCub bites his own legDayton supporting our research.  We say “Happy Birthday” and many more for this woman who dedicates her life to good so effectively.  Lily Fans can sign her birthday card and leave a comment for her at http://www.janegoodall.org/jane-birthdaycard.
