Melting – UPDATE March 30, 2014

Big yawn for JulietBig yawn for JulietTemperatures reached 55F today.  Snow levels dropped.  But will the water soak into the frozen ground?  Frost levels went unusually deep this winter as evidenced by the unusual number of waterline freeze-ups in Ely.  Waterlines are typically down 7 feet.  Frost can continue to go deeper for some time after the surface begins to warm. Juliet makes a faceJuliet makes a faceEly Public Utilities officials recommend that people let their faucets run a stream to prevent freeze-ups until the ice melts from the lakes.  Last year, that was in May.  At Lynn’s house in Ely, incoming cold water is down to 34F with worries about freezing.  At the WRI, with a 168-foot well, incoming cold water is 44F with no worries.  We hope the meltwater soaks into the ground and makes big berries for the bears.

Cub making facesCub making facesWe're excited to see donations coming in for the 75th Birthday Fundraiser.  We’re on our way toward the $20,000 match needed to secure the $20,000 grant—thank you!  Donations can be made thru April 13 at http://www.bear.org/website/bearmans-75th.html?view=donation&campaign_id=4.

Thank you for all you do.
