Miscellany – UPDATE January 20, 2013

Jewel and yearlings - Jan 20, 2013Jewel and yearlings - Jan 20, 2013The bears were fairly inactive today.  Maybe temperatures that ranged from minus 14F to a high of minus 2F are colder than they’d like, and Lily has a big job to do—keeping the little ones warm in these temperatures.

Jewel and yearlings - Jan 20, 2013Jewel and yearlings - Jan 20, 2013So it was another day of burning brains.  You could almost smell the smoke.  In fact, one person who stopped by asked what was burning.  But any smell from our ‘burning brains’ was masked by something that had burned on the stove.  Sue shouldn’t have to work that hard on her birthday!

There were two nice articles in the Duluth News Tribune today.  One on Lily and the cubs (http://www.duluthnewstribune.com/event/article/id/256193/) and another on our new Executive Director who will be arriving in a little over a month to free Lynn up for more data analysis and writing (http://www.duluthnewstribune.com/event/article/id/256195/).

On Lily the Black Bear’s Facebook page, there’s a nice article on the Bear Moon which will be full in about a week.  So many new Facebook Fans have joined lately that the Bear Facts and Fun Team thought it was worth running that interesting article again (https://www.facebook.com/notes/bffbetty/what-is-a-bear-moon/251326164998210).

Ford van odometerFord van odometerOne thing happened just recently was a long time coming.  Probably the only person interested is Lynn with his obsessive numbers mind.  The odometer of the trusty old Ford van that has carried so many Black Bear Field Course participants turned over.  Lynn was fascinated as the numbers lined up and all changed at once.  Some people are easily entertained.  The longevity of the van, still running great, is a testament to the Service Department at Tousley Ford.  Twin Cities Lily Fans will recognize that name.  Every year, the trusted service manager there drives the van down to the cities, treats it like it were his own, and drives it back up to Ely safe and ready for another year.  He is a Lily Fan, of course, but he has been doing that for nearly a decade.  A big thank you to him.

Meanwhile, your responses to the Calendar offer and the Love Mug Valentine’s Day offer (http://www.bear.org/website/gift-shop.html) deserve a huge thank you!

Thank you for all you do.
