The Wildlife Research Institute conducts field operations from the Northwoods Research Center, a field station between Eagles Nest Lake and Woods Lake, 14 miles west of Ely, Minnesota. Ninety miles north of Duluth, the Northwoods Research Center is 5 miles from the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and 27 miles from Canada. The property is 50 acres of forest, meadow, streams, lakes, and wetland. The forest is a transition forest between northern hardwoods and boreal forest, so it is unusually diverse. Consequently, the wildlife is unusually diverse.
