Samantha’s Day - UPDATE August 2, 2019

This day started and ended with Samantha and her four cubs. The day began with her nursing the cubs but revealing a problem. Samantha and her cubsSamantha and her cubsThree of the cubs each occupied 2 nipples and didn’t allow the fourth cub to nurse. In my earliest study, I saw reduced survival in litters of four,Samantha and 3 cubsSamantha and 3 cubs and I now wonder if some of that was due to exclusion of a fourth cub and not just because the mother didn’t have enough milk for all four as I suspected then. In this study, all 8 litters of four have survived in total so far, although 4 of those litters are this year with the year only a little over half done. I think all four of Samantha’s cubs will survive. The excluded cub is eating sunflower seed hearts at the moment. The other three are sleeping alongside Samantha.

Thank you for all you do.
