Three grandkids (14-year-old Kate, 9-year-old Heinrik, and 7-year-old Gabrielle) and their parents livened up the Fourth for Donna and Me. Bears were a highlight—plus other wildlife, including gray fox parents going and coming from their burrow and pups. On a pontoon ride, the yellow light of sunset gave a hint of yellow to a loon’s head and shades of iridescent green to its neck ring, both of which usually appear black.

We watched a spider make the main strands of its web and then go in circles around the web filling in the strands that are close enough together to catch bugs.

The grandkids watched how a raccoon used its hands to pick up food. The raccoon ignored them watching through a window from two feet away.

Today, gentle 3-year-old Lucy stopped by after an absence. For the first time, I noticed that her mammary glands were somewhat swollen and her nipples enlarged. She has either lost cubs or has a cub or two off in the forest, her first litter. This could be something good. I don’t know where she’s been, but strawberries and blueberries are ripening. Stawberries were tasty on our way down to the pontoon boat yesterday.

The grandkids enjoyed working at the Bear Center, holding snakes and turtles to show other young people during Critter Time, giving a shower to Ted, and helping to make meals for the bears.

A super fourth.

Thank you for all you do.
