Fun in the Forest - UPDATE June 29, 2019

With a week and a day to go before the first Black Bear Field Course, males are drifting in with new attitudes. Donna 6-19-19Donna 6-19-19Mating is about over, and play is in the air. Three-year-olds Fred and Ricky showed up, Fred with fresh new identifying marks—a cut on the right side of his face and a wound on his left ear—in addition to his unusual light-colored claws. Then, after the trauma he apparently faced during mating season, he dared to initiate play with 8-year-old Aspen (son of June). He tried taking down the larger bear, and Aspen let him. RC went over to them as if to tell them to knock off having so much fun and Fred approached her to say “No!” and 20-year-old RC backed off. Young Fred might have gained some confidence this mating season?

We now know that 19-year-old Donna’s 4 cubs are two males and two females. This is Donna’s third litter of four.

Thank you for all you do.
