Bears, Pond, a Woodchuck, a Blonde Bear, and a Smile - UPDATE June 13, 2019

At the Bear Center, the bears are getting individual deliveries of food and their own bathtubs and piles of cedar chips to make life as good as it can be during the pond repair.NABC's Blonde visiting maleBlonde visiting male Moe (Patrick McKibbage) recorded Scott giving a good account of the pond improvements that are coming—deeper, prettier, easier to see from the viewing windows, etc. as he tells in this 9-minute video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p03ucEMmVak.

Meanwhile, a woodchuck has the run of the enclosure and is eating the same kind of plant that bears here eat in spring—Big-leafed Aster (Eurybia macrophylla). However, the woodchuck is eating the leaves at the full heart-shaped mature stage that bears reject. Bears eat it only when it is newly emerged and still furled. A mod got a nice video of this woodchuck teaching me about this. Thank you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mj_-FmIvJp8. I don’t know what it is about the fresh cement that also interests the woodchuck. I never thought of cement as being edible. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmVpSZb0PyE.

Out the window here at the WRI, an unknown blonde male that I’m guessing to be a 2 or 3-year-old is making appearances. He won’t be blonde long, though. He is shedding his bleached blonde fur and growing new dark brown fur that will end up looking blonde by next spring. It is starting on his face and forelegs to give us a preview of the dark color he will become. He has light-colored claws as is usual for brown-phase bears.

We smiled when we saw a report from Amazon Smile showing what you have been doing for the North American Bear Center! It was a notice of a quarterly donation from Amazon Smile of $522.95 and a tally of $11,034.09 donated to date from all of you who signed up to go through Amazon Smile and designate the North American Bear Center as your charity of choice. (more info here) Thank you!

Thank you for all you do.
