Fern and Woodchuck Drama - UPDATE May 13, 2019

Fern was spotted at two places 2.7 miles apart the last 2 days. One of them sent a cell phone picture. Don’t know about cubs yet. Fern by JT - 5-12-19Fern by JT - 5-12-19She had 3 cubs in 2016 but none last year, so she should have them this year unless she missed again. But having her move that far makes me wonder if she has cubs. We’ll see.

A couple days ago, the smaller woodchuck sprinted across the driveway followed a couple seconds later by this big one that had attacked it a week or so ago. It had been standing in a burrow entrance that the adult rose up out of to tell it to live somewhere else. A couple days later the smaller one dug its own burrow. That’s where it ran to when it was being chased by this one. She(?) is used to me enough that this beautiful morning when I took a couple minutes to stand outside listening to birds while I was on the phone, she emerged from a new entrance of her own and didn’t worry about me 10 feet away. She also doesn’t mind a person watching her a couple feet away through a window as she dines on romaine lettuce and sunflower seed hearts. I’m waiting to see if babies emerge from one of her burrows.
