Mink Minds and More - UPDATE December 17, 2018

I’m amazed at how fast mink can learn. They learned I was the source of bologna when I stepped out and tossed it to them. Red squirrelThen one after another took it from my hand. Today, three times I looked out the door for mink and found a mink at the door. Each watched as I opened the little refrigerator, got a piece of bologna, and opened the door. Each was hesitant and retreating at times as I crouched down and put out my hand, but each of the three eventually took the bologna from my hand. One was the big male with the clear white patch, another was a smaller one with stripes in the white patch, and the third was a similar size one with a clear white patch. The only picture was a quick shot of the third one out the window before I got up and opened the door. By that time, it knew what I was up to and was at the door. We’ll see if they become calmer and more trusting as time goes on.

A male red-breasted nuthatch was brave enough to take sunflower seed hearts from my hand, too. It will be fun to have some of these birds that stick around for summer get used to that for the people in the courses next summer.
