Big Beautiful Bear! Eagle, Local Color, and Cub Room - UPDATE May 2, 2018

The surprise of the day was a big beautiful bear showing up. I don’t know who he is, but he knows us. People will look him up and solve the mystery. It felt good.BearBear

The other day we talked about which birds can carry a one-pound leg of chicken. There was the 1-pound crow, the 2.5-pound herring gull, and the 2.6-pound raven. Today came the 9.5-pound bald eagle (according to Sibley 2014). He was photogenic in the way he snatched it up, but he or she was efficient. Faster than I could set the camera, it swooped in with talons extended, grabbed the chicken leg with its left foot, and was airborne effortlessly with a little of the chicken leg showing beneath the end of its tail, while herring gulls watched helplessly.

For local color, a purple finch (weight less than an ounce) stopped by, joined later by the most colorful common redpoll I’ve ever seen.

At the Bear Center, the crew went into action upgrading the Cub Room.
