<p>Producer/videographer Lia Kvatum attended the May 10-13, 2009 Black Bear Field Study Course.</p>
<p>The bear 'kissing' Lynn Rogers in this video is not a wild bear. Ted E. Bear is a captive born and raised bear who now resides at the North American Bear Center (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bear.org">www.bear.org</a>). Although Ted is perhaps the largest black bear in the world, he would rather lick your face than eat and he is particularly fond of Lynn.</p>

<p>Steve Leonard is in the USA to see at first hand a wild wide awake hibernating black bear called Blackheart. Does this awesome skill of hibernation, where no food or liquid has been consumed for six long months, qualify the black bear as an Extreme Animal? Cute baby cubs are found inside the warm den.</p>

Working with biologist Lynn Rogers, Ph.D., for over 40 years,
the Wildlife Research Institute (WRI) is conducting the longest and
most detailed black bear study and the largest educational outreach
program ever done for black bears. Research focuses on improving
coexistence between people and bears in an increasingly urbanized
environment. WRI provides the information to over a hundred million
people each year through TV, radio, books, magazines, museum exhibits,
black bear courses, and the Internet. It
created the content for the North American Bear Center's new Visitor
Center, which opened near Ely, Minnesota, on May 5, 2007. WRI works
with government agencies to improve bear management. WRI is a 501(c)(3)
nonprofit organization supported by course fees, lecture fees,
memberships, donors, volunteers, merchandise sales, and dedicated
volunteers. Want to know more about black bears? Join a <a href="http://www.bearstudy.org/website/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=102&Itemid=130" target="_self">Black Bear Course</a> (a field
